Comedy will make people uncomfortable by the way it reframes conditions. In the best situations, it can completely reframe unjust structures and practices, make people rethink their ideas, and set people on a different path. But hack material (easy laughs with no insight) are more often the fallback. It’s much easier to do a “What people do with their genitals is weird” or “those people” material than it is to have meaningful insights, especially if the majority of your career is trying to make a half-filled room of unknown drunks like you for 15 minutes. One of the hardest things to watch is someone who has had blistering insight fall to simply churning up hack material because they stopped having the ability to see what in culture needs to be dissolved and what needs to be reinforced.
