One of the mysteries around Anton LaVey tends to be how powerfully people feel motivated to protect the illusion that he attempted to make of himself. This is especially odd to see when someone knew him well being confronted by people who have only known the glamour. My trying to sort this out coincided with the rise of social media, and the explosion of parasocial relationship manipulation.
Who the person was does not matter in the support the parasocial construction in someone’s mind. And if that parasocial figure was key towards your own self development, there is a bit of defending yourself built into defending that parasocial relationship.
